Millions of people who haven’t registered to vote yet are being encouraged to do so before the deadline later today.
Today, Tuesday, is the last day to register in time for the general election. The deadline is 23:59 BST on 18 June.
Since the election was announced in May, over 2.1 million people have registered, according to government data.
Registering online takes about five minutes, and the election is just over two weeks away, on Thursday 4 July.
Last Thursday was the busiest day for voter registration this year, with 330,621 applications, including 75,605 from people aged 18 to 24.
The Electoral Commission says that young people, private renters, and those who have recently moved are less likely to be registered correctly.
Their research found that nearly eight million people were not registered correctly in 2022. The report showed that nearly one-third of 20 to 24-year-olds and 40% of 18 and 19-year-olds were not registered to vote in 2022. In comparison, 96% of people over 65 and 94% of those aged 55 to 64 were registered.
The report said that registration levels have been “broadly stable across the UK” except for Northern Ireland, which has seen a significant increase since 2018, and Wales, which has also seen an increase, though to a lesser extent.
“A general election is an important opportunity for people to express their views, and registering is the first step to the ballot box,” said Jackie Killeen from the Electoral Commission.
There is more time to apply for a postal or proxy vote. The deadline for postal applications is 17:00 on Wednesday, 19 June, and for a proxy vote, it’s 17:00 on Wednesday, 26 June. The deadline for postal or proxy votes in Northern Ireland has already passed.
People voting at polling stations will need to show photo ID. The Electoral Commission urges everyone to check they have one of the 22 accepted forms of ID.
