PlayStation Network goes down, and gamers complain a lot

Problems started in the UK around midnight on Friday, with over 71,000 people saying they lost access to online events.

The PlayStation Network (PSN) is not working, stopping gamers around the world from playing online over the weekend.

PSN is Sony’s online gaming service for PlayStation users. It lets players connect and play with others worldwide.

The issue began in the UK at midnight on Friday.

Around 71,000 gamers reported the problem to PlayStation’s website. Many users cannot enter online game lobbies, use the PlayStation Store, or access their accounts.

PSN has a paid subscription that costs £13.49 per month, £39.99 for three months, or £119.99 per year. Many gamers are upset about the outage, especially since they pay for the service.

On weekends, some games have special tournaments and online events. FC 25, a popular football game by Electronic Arts, has Championship matches, also called the “weekend league,” in its Ultimate Team mode. Players spend many hours and often a lot of money building their Ultimate Team squads.

Because of the outage, Call of Duty fans can’t play during its special weekend event. They also miss out on double XP (extra experience points) in Black Ops 6 and Warzone.

Thousands of PlayStation users are upset and have shared their frustration online with memes, jokes, and complaints.

One user on X (formerly Twitter) wrote:
“Let’s be honest, everyone should get this month’s PS Plus for free. Paying for the service and then having it go down on a weekend is unfair. Did someone fall asleep on their night shift? We’re at hour 5 now.”

Another said:
“I work all day, then come home to see PlayStation servers are down on a Friday.”

Someone else joked:
“PlayStation network is down… Guess I’ll finally talk to my wife of 5 years.”

Sony confirmed the issue and said it was working to fix it as soon as possible. On its support page, PlayStation said it knew about the problem and was trying to solve it.

The Guardian has asked PlayStation, FC 25 developer Electronic Arts, and Call of Duty publisher Activision Blizzard for a comment.
