A prominent women’s violence adviser has come forward to share her own experience of sexual assault, shedding light on the enduring trauma faced by survivors and advocating for greater support and understanding.
She (Johanna Robinson) said she was raped in her early 20s, by a man she knew, while she was asleep.
She says it took her a while to understand what had happened to her.
The adviser, whose identity has been kept confidential to protect her privacy, disclosed that she was raped in her youth, an ordeal that left a profound impact on her life and career. Despite the passage of time, the trauma of the assault continued to haunt her, shaping her advocacy work and commitment to supporting survivors of gender-based violence.
Speaking out about her own experience, the adviser emphasized the importance of amplifying the voices of survivors and breaking the silence surrounding sexual violence. She underscored the prevalence of rape and sexual assault, highlighting the urgent need for society to confront the pervasive culture of impunity and victim-blaming that often surrounds these crimes.
As a leading advocate for women’s rights and gender equality, the adviser has dedicated her career to combating violence against women and girls, working tirelessly to improve support services, strengthen legal protections, and challenge societal attitudes that perpetuate gender-based violence.
Her decision to share her story publicly comes at a time of heightened awareness around issues of sexual violence and harassment, fueled in part by the global #MeToo movement and increasing calls for accountability and justice.
The adviser’s courage in speaking out about her own experience has sparked a renewed conversation about the prevalence of sexual violence and the barriers faced by survivors in seeking justice and support. Her advocacy serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience and strength of survivors and the importance of solidarity in the fight against gender-based violence.
In response to her disclosure, there has been an outpouring of support from colleagues, activists, and survivors, who have praised her bravery and resilience in confronting her trauma publicly. Many have commended her for her unwavering dedication to advancing the rights of women and survivors of sexual violence.
As the conversation continues, the adviser hopes that her disclosure will encourage others to break their silence and seek support, while also spurring policymakers and communities to take meaningful action to prevent sexual violence and support survivors on their journey towards healing and justice. Her story serves as a poignant reminder that behind every statistic is a human being with a voice that deserves to be heard and a story that deserves to be told.
